Why make a pilgrimage to Bessin?

The chapel in Bessin is one of the oldest monuments in the southwest of Rügen. It is a small “wayside chapel” in the center of the village, donated by the mayor of Stralsund, Darne, in 1482 and recorded in his will in 1485.

The “sleepy” village of Bessin itself is a farming community that was first mentioned in the 13th century and has changed little since that time.

The chapel in the center of the village is a typical place of tranquility, with rustic outdoor seating and unspoilt nature, inviting you to commune with yourself, let the calm wash over you and visualize the rest of your pilgrimage in your mind. That is why the chapel in Bessin plays a special role on the Birgitten pilgrimage route.

The chapel itself is an eight-sided, elongated brick building with a plastered limestone base. Below the eaves, there is a German band interrupted at the edges of the building.

The windows on the north and south sides have three mullions. The western of the two round-arched doorways and three windows are walled up.

The interior is plastered. There is a flat board ceiling and in the three eastern walls there is a flat round-arched niche.

A large, timber-clad oriel with a gable roof for the bell has been added to the west of the eight-sided, steep hipped roof with monk and nun roofing.

The pulpit altar, dating from 1742, is made of pine and lime wood. Plastered brick mensa, without cover; a 0.5 m deep niche on the south side. Extended to the front in wood since the 18th century.

The original painting, done in 1743 by Maler Dame of Stralsund, showed the architectural elements in black and brown marbling, the carvings in white with sparing gilding.

The oak crucifix and the slender bell, with a ribbed crown and bronze foundry marks, date from the 15th century, while the belfry dates from the 17th century.

The medieval limestone stoup is from the 18th century, with a diameter of 39cm, hemispherical with a deep cavity.
